The Secret to Weight Loss

Some Exercise Essentials
Because I’ve long been a health and fitness enthusiast and have worked in the health field for many years, I often get asked what I think about the latest diet crazes, weight loss pills or spot-reducing exercise equipment.  But no matter how the question is asked, I usually respond with a similar answer:  there’s no quick fix.  If you want results, you have to put in effort.  As a society, we’ve taken something that is so simple and straightforward and have turned it into a frenzied multi-billion dollar industry.  The secret to weight loss doesn’t lie hidden in the depths of a fat-burning pill bottle or in limiting an entire food group from our diets, the answer lies in using plain old common sense*:   get moderate amounts of exercise most days of the week, drink plenty of clean, pure water and eat a clean diet, heavy on fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins.  Don’t waste time obsessing over counting calories and fat grams on a daily basis; who has time for that?  Choosing natural, unprocessed foods allows your body to function optimally without having to think about whether or not it’s on your list of approved foods.  Sure, it might take you longer to drop the weight, but guess what?  You’ll keep it off a lot longer, too, because when you make healthy changes it becomes a way of life, not just a temporary ‘diet’.  And don’t push yourself to make changes overnight.  I once read that it takes your body/mind about two weeks to learn a new habit, so give yourself time.  Make small changes every couple of weeks until you’ve created a new, healthier lifestyle for yourself.  For example, for the first week of your ‘lifestyle makeover’, start drinking more water every day until it just becomes habit for you to reach for water when you’re thirsty instead of a diet soda.  Once that new habit is in place, add a new challenge, like deciding to walk every day for at least 10 minutes, then slowly increase by a couple minutes every day until you’re up to at least 30 minutes a day.  And if you’re hard-pressed for time like most of us are, feel free to break up the daily walks into 10 minute segments (start your morning with a 10 minute walk, take a quick 10-minute lunchtime stroll and another one post-dinner and you’ll have gotten your full 30 minutes in in one day). Each couple of weeks, simply add one new change that you would like to incorporate into your new lifestyle and keep at it until it becomes a habit before you add a new change.  Soon you will begin to see and feel changes that will provide you with the motivation that you need to keep at it.  You want to adopt a new way of thinking about food and exercise so that it becomes your lifestyle, not a temporary fix.  Make sure you choose foods and activities that you enjoy so that it won’t seem like you are sacrificing.  For example, if you think you have to run 5 miles a day to lose weight because that’s what your friend did, but you hate running, then don’t do it!  Find something else that you do enjoy like biking or swimming, speed-walking, group sports, whatever fits your personality that keeps you active is what’s going to motivate you and that’s key.  The same goes for food.  If you think you can only eat salad for lunch and dinner to lose weight, you will soon get bored.  Experiment with recipes that utilize different vegetables and spices that you’re unfamiliar with to add some variety and zest to your meals.  Make it fun.  Buy more fresh and frozen foods and less processed and canned alternatives.  It’s okay to splurge now and then as long as the majority of the time you are choosing good, healthy foods.  Eat until you are almost full, don’t stuff yourself (yes, even at the all-you-can-eat-buffet); don’t think of food as 'good or bad', think of it as nourishment.  Just have a healthy relationship with food, exercise and yourself and you’re bound to look as good as you are supposed to (ie--your own healthy weight, not some imaginary ideal)! You don’t always see it right away but you can feel it when you’re at your best:  happier, lighter, more energetic, stronger, healthier. You’re most beautiful that way.

*You should always obtain a health screening from your physician before beginning any diet or exercise program.

Acne

Most of us have had to suffer the occasional pimple/zit/blemish one time or another (usually at the most inopportune moments, like prom night or right before an interview!).  Still others have to deal with them on a daily basis.  But regardless of whether you’re an occasional or daily sufferer, dealing with acne can be a frustrating and embarrassing ordeal, particularly for those who do all the 'right things' to prevent it, such as eating healthy, drinking lots of water, cleaning the face with acne-fighting cleansers, etc.  Although acne is usually hereditary, there are other factors that may induce a flare-up such as improper cleansing, over-indulging in certain ‘trigger’ foods (usually processed foods high in sodium and fat), constantly touching the face with your hands or cell phone (both common sources of bacteria), using comedogenic (pore*-clogging) products, hormonal changes (think puberty, menopause, high stress levels) and not removing make-up before bed to name a few.  To help you better understand acne, let’s break it down into categories.  Essentially there are four categories, or grades, of acne.  Grade I is characterized by a few open and closed clogged pores* (known as comedones) and some flesh-colored bumps called papules.  Grade II acne is recognized by all the characteristics of Grade I plus the occasional pus-filled zit, or pustule.  Grade III acne is a more inflamed version of Grade II with a greater presence of papules and pustules.  Grade IV acne consists of all the inflammations present in Grades I-III plus painful, cystic acne.  It must be noted that, with the help of an Esthetician (if you’re not sure what an Esthetician is, see the explanation here:  http://greenearthskin.blogspot.com/2013/09/an-estheticianwhat-is-that.html) you can treat the first three grades of acne; however, Grade IV acne--the most severe--must be treated by a dermatologist.  If you suffer from any of the first 3 Grades of acne it is recommended that you visit an Esthetician once a week for 4-6 weeks to get the break-outs under control.  Once the acne is well-managed, your visits can become less frequent, usually once a month for maintenance.  Your Esthetician will customize a treatment plan for your specific skin type and condition.  To make the plan successful, however, you will need to follow your Esthetician’s recommendations at home.  Some general advice that you will probably hear is the following:  drink plenty of water, wash your skin twice a day and don’t pick at your pimples!  More specific advice, tailored to you, will probably include a skin care line recommendation and instructions on how to use the products at home for maximum efficacy.  Your at-home routine will more than likely consist of a gel or lotion cleanser with anti-bacterial properties, a gentle exfoliant and an oil-free moisturizer.  For more information on exfoliation, see a previous post here at:  http://greenearthskin.blogspot.com/2013/09/exfoliationin-nutshell-although.html.  Dermalogica® is a popular high-quality brand that many spas effectively use and has an extensive line of products for acneic skin.  Another brand that is very effective against acne is BlackBox Cosmetics’™ GeniSkin Line that has bactericidal ingredients in a soothing aloe base.  Aloe is a wonderful base for a product line geared towards fighting acne as it has anti-inflammatory properties and is also pH-balanced.  Read more about the wonders of aloe here:  http://greenearthskin.blogspot.com/2013/09/aloes-juicy-secret-revealed-most-of-us.html.  To learn more about BlackBox Cosmetics™ or purchase the products, click here:  http://shop.blackboxcosmetics.com/JB1943  and see below for a few testimonials about BlackBox Cosmetics’™ amazing products:

"I am loving the GeniSkin kit! I have been a loyal proactive user for over 5 years and decided to try something new! I love that this product doesn't strip your face of all its natural moisture! It makes my face smooth and fresh! I think the facial scrub is my favorite part:) it polishes away dead skin and keeps your face clear! Ultimately I love that this is non-toxic:)! Thanks for all of your help Mandy! I'm thinking about possibly selling this product:) my mother and I live in different states and none of our friends have heard about this amazing stuff:)"  Janelle
"I had been using a popular acne treatment product advertised on TV and found my face dry and irritated over time. I was only using the cleanser and no after care on my face.  The severe dryness was aging my skin, so although I do have adult acne sometimes, and BlackBox offers the GeniSkin for acne treatment, I decided to go with the Restoration Kit that's stocked with everything I need for a more vibrant look. I am very pleased with these products and I actually look forward to my morning and evening skin routine because I know it's so good for my skin! I took a photo when I first started and comparing to now, my skin looks so stimulated and full of life!"  Kathryn, Seattle, WA

*although people mistakenly use the word pore when referring to skin care (clogged pores, large pores, etc.), it’s technically the follicle that they are talking about.  Pores are your skin’s openings that allow sweat to be excreted to detoxify and cool the skin.  Follicles are the openings in your skin that contain hair and allow oil to be secreted for skin protection.  To avoid confusion, the common term, pore was used in this article.

Blackbox Cosmetics™

GeniSkin™ line by Blackbox Cosmetics™
As you have probably noticed, most of my blog entries include multiple product mentions or links to sites that promote or discuss products that I enjoy.  You’ve probably also noticed that, in particular, I refer to the Blackbox Cosmetics™ site.  A lot.  The reason?  Well, as a skin care/ healthy living enthusiast and a recent Esthetics graduate I love it when I discover a product that impresses me because it’s such an infrequent occurrence.  I’ve tried a lot of products (and even have a few skin care staples) but have been noticing that my skin care ritual is constantly changing since so few products impress me enough to buy them repeatedly.  For a list of my OTC essentials, view my blog post here:  http://greenearthskin.blogspot.com/2013/09/some-of-my-favorite-otc-products.html.  For me, finding a product that ‘gets it right’ is kind of like trying on clothes; you usually have to try out quite a few before finding the ‘right fit’.  But when you do find it, you know it instantly!   For me that's how it was with Blackbox Cosmetics™---the perfect fit!  For me to be impressed by a skin care product it has to meet all of the following requirements:

~The product should contain high-quality, effective ingredients that you can pronounce and identify.
~The containers should be pretty and fun as well as recyclable.
~The scents should be subtle, fresh and natural.
~The product should be easy to use, effective and affordable.
~ Everyone should have access to them.

Blackbox Cosmetics™ meets all of those requirements and when I learned about them and then tried the products I was just hooked.  To read my product review of Blackbox Cosmetics'™ 6 Minute Miracle™, go to:  http://greenearthskin.blogspot.com/2013/09/product-review-6-minute-miracle.html.  All of the skin and hair care products by Blackbox Cosmetics™ are created using high-quality botanicals and anti-oxidants in an aloe base and are packaged in acrylic containers that don’t allow light or air in, thereby protecting the potency of the products.  The skin care lines (Restoration for normal to aging skin and GeniSkin for oily/acneic skin) come in eye-catching jewel-toned refillable containers.  When the cartridge inside is empty, you simply remove it, recycle it and pop in a new one, making these products eco-friendly.  All of the products are botanically preserved (lending a light, natural scent to the products) so there is no concern of carcinogenic preservatives imposing on your daily skin care ritual.   And because the company is a direct sales company, they keep their overhead costs very low and transfer those savings on to you with their super-affordable pricing!  You don't have to go to the store, a salon OR a doctor's office to get these high-quality products.  You can order them directly from the company (based in Florida) from my website at: http://shop.blackboxcosmetics.com/JB1943.  Enjoy some of these testimonials below:

“I try all new products out there that make claims of making your skin more youthful. I guess I believe in the "Fountain of Youth".  After being on the BlackBox Cosmetics for about a month, my skin was smoother and less lines around my eyes.  I have never experienced any products that made my pores smaller and these do!!  I love my skin for the first time in my life.  Others have noticed too!  At least 3 times a week someone tells me how nice my complexion is. It really is nice to hear and I get a chance to tell them about BlackBox.  Last weekend my Husband and I were shopping and I returned to the shopping cart to put my items in it.  My Husband was speaking with a sales associate and she said is this your daughter?  I said oh thank you but I am his wife, she said, "you look so young."  Wow, I called my Husband daddy the rest of the day.  We are both 48 years old and I think he is hot still after 30 years and now he is using the products so he can look younger too!  Ann M., Massachusetts.”  Ann in Belchertown, MA
“Everything about BlackBox Cosmetics is wonderful; the cost, the packaging, the smell of the products, the safety of the products, the feel of the products on my skin along with the improvement I have noticed in my skin! My skin is beginning to look like is glows.  I have used many expensive products and have really struggled to find a full line that addresses the needs of my skin with such ease.  I am really impressed with this company and the quality of their products. ~ Mary K Johnson-Garay”   Mary in Superior, WI

"I love the way my skin looks and feels since using BlackBox Cosmetics.  My skin glows.  It makes me happy to know that I am using skin care products with high-end ingredients in them.  BBC leaves your skin feeling clean and nourished without drying your skin out like a lot of other products on the market do.  I've only been using BBC for a month, but the changes in my skin are apparent in a short amount of time. I will never use anything on my skin other than BlackBox Cosmetics."
Nicole in California

“I am an obsessed with skincare. I have tried nearly EVERY product out there on the market. I am very impressed with BlackBox. These products have Teprenone which is a VERY expensive skin treatment for wrinkles - this brand is hypoallergenic and has top nutrients!  For the cost, you have the FINEST ingredients available all in a buffered aloe base and NO preservatives. Very impressive indeed. In relation to the other mass marketed "solutions" BlackBox really does deliver what it says and at a much lower, eco-friendly cost. I am so happy and impressed. Also, my 16 year old son LOVES Frost face wash. It is all he uses to keep his skin clean and he has had terrible acne problems until he started using Frost.  Make the switch – it’s worth it!”  Melissa in Dallas, PA

“BlackBox Cosmetics are by far the best skincare products that I have ever used. They leave my skin feeling incredibly clean and smooth to the touch, and are able to do it without any harsh chemicals. When I use BlackBox Cosmetics, I know that I'm using a product that heals and repairs my skin, who wouldn't love that!”  Valerie in Timnath, CO

“The things I like most about BlackBox cosmetics are the principles behind the formulations, no chemicals, aloe based instead of water, refillable containers, air tight packaging and nothing over 10 months old. The air tight packaging and nothing over 10 months old were huge sellers for me. I am in the beauty industry and this is an issue that I have brought up time and again. You never know how old something you are purchasing is and they are often so heavily perfumed it would be impossible to tell. I like the feel of all of the products and was recently told my skin looked dewy. I look forward to seeing the results of extended use and I am so happy that I have found cosmetics that I can get behind.”  Micheline in Leicester, NC

“I love the products!  I see something different every week.  After the first week, I noticed that my skin was overall looking healthier and had a glow...even a co-worker mentioned it, and then she ordered her first kit!  After the second week, I noticed that some acne scars and sun-damage spots were fading faster than with my previous skin care line, and some had completely disappeared!  That was HUGE for me, because week after week, I have been using less and less concealer.  After the 3rd week, I noticed that my under eye bags were not as visible and puffy, and even though I didn't have dark circles, the under eye area is brighter, which makes me look much more rested and my eyes appear brighter.  After the 4th week, I noticed that some fine lines had faded and my face is tighter and my skin has plumped, making me feel like I'm looking at myself 10 years ago!  My skin just looks better and feels better every week!  My absolute favorite product is the Sea-Mask!  I use it after I use the 6 Minute Miracle, and it is like a mini face-lift!  My skin is so tight, smooth and poreless after using it!  I am so happy with all of the products, and I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of future products!”
Mandy in Columbia, TN

“I love my Cupuacu Mint shampoo because it eliminates the need for me to buy a detangler!!  I have very thick, long hair. And the scent for all of the shampoos and conditioners is just amazing!!  Like out of this world wonderful!!”  Angela in Charlotte, NC

"I love the Jojoba Tan ! I love the way it smells and the way it is applied. I have no streaks at all on my face. No one has even picked up on the fact that I use it. It is priced fairly and the container has more product than what I had expected. Thanks for another great product BlackBox."  Barbara Lee in Gainesville, FL

My Banana (Nut, or Not) Muffins Recipe

Weather-wise, 2013 has been an unusual year for those of us living in the Southeastern United States. Normally September just feels like a hot, sweltering extension of August, but this year has been pleasantly mild.  In fact, this morning dawned cool and misty (perfect outdoor exercise weather to me!) so I went out for a jog.  While jogging I was mentally organizing my agenda for the next few days:  get groceries, go to afternoon meeting, write new blog post, make banana muffins for my sister’s baby shower...hmmm, since it’s a healthier version of the original recipe, why not share the recipe in your next blog post? I thought to myself.  I love baking, especially when I can modify a recipe to make it (secretly) healthier without sacrificing taste.  And I don't know about you, but cool weather makes me want to put an apron on, pull out the mixing bowls and get to work inside an oven-warmed, delectably-scented kitchen!   So, here’s my healthier version of banana (nut, or not) muffins**.  These moist, delicious muffins make an excellent breakfast-on-the-go, great after school snack or even dessert and complement a glass of milk or mug of coffee perfectly! Hope you enjoy!

Ingredients and supplies for Banana (Nut, or Not) Muffins

Ingredients

~ 2 cups of all-purpose flour
~¾ tsp. baking soda
~ ¼ tsp. salt
~1 tsp. cinnamon*
~1 cup sugar
~1/4 cup butter*, softened
~2 large eggs*
~3 ripe bananas*, mashed
~4oz.-6oz. container of vanilla yogurt*
~1 tsp. vanilla extract
~1 cup dark chocolate chips* (optional)
~1/2 cup walnuts* (optional)

Directions
  • ·         Pre-heat the oven to 350°.
  • ·         In a medium bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, salt and cinnamon until well-blended.  Set aside.
  • ·         In a large bowl, soften the butter in the microwave, then add the sugar and mix by hand or with a blender.  Add both eggs and blend them into the sugar mixture.  Once blended, add the mashed         bananas, yogurt and vanilla extract and mix together.
  • ·         Add the flour mixture into the sugar mixture and mix gently but thoroughly until well-blended.  Once blended, add the chocolate chips and walnuts if you are using them (and why wouldn’t you?!) and mix until evenly distributed.
  • ·         Spray muffin tins with cooking spray and spoon in the muffin batter.  Bake at 350° for 30 minutes if using traditional sized muffin tins (makes about 18 muffins).  15 minutes is sufficient for mini-muffins (makes 36).  Bake for 1 hour if using a loaf pan.  Cool for 10 minutes and then remove from the pan.  Enjoy!

*Note that each of the ingredients with an asterisk (*) beside it adds the following health benefit(s) to the muffins:

*cinnamon—antimicrobial/anti-inflammatory properties
*butter—use Smart Balance® to get a heart-healthy, skin-radiant dose of Omega 3’s!
*eggs—these breakfast staples add protein to the mix (skin needs protein to stay healthy!)
*bananas—potassium, Vitamin B, fiber
*yogurt—although the cooking process destroys the good bacteria in yogurt, it’s still a good   source of protein and calcium
*dark chocolate—heart-and-skin-healthy antioxidants!  Did I mention delicious?!
*walnuts—protein, fiber and healthy unsaturated fats

**Adapted from the Cooking Light® Cookbook’s recipe for Classic Banana Bread

Happy Fall, everyone!  I hope you enjoy baking and eating these muffins!! Let me know what you think in the comment box below!

Ayurveda and Skin Health: What’s YOUR dosha?

Ayurveda is an ancient holistic approach to medicine that addresses the whole person---mind, body and spirit, for health maintenance and disease prevention.  It accomplishes this by encouraging proper, balanced self-care according to one’s personal constitution, or dosha.   According to Ayurvedic theory, if one’s dosha is in balance, one will benefit from optimal health.  Conversely, if there are imbalances in one’s dosha, disease will manifest in a variety of symptoms.  These symptoms provide clues as to what imbalances may be occurring in the body and allow one to apply Ayurvedic principles to achieve a balanced state.  Ayurvedic theory does not recommend masking symptoms, but rather making lifestyle changes to reach a state of personal balance.
There are three doshas (constitution types) known as vata, pitta and kapha.  Even though every person possesses some qualities of each of the doshas, most people are a combination of two doshas, where one is dominant and the other secondary (I'm a pitta-kapha).  There are some cases in which people have one very prominent dosha or in even rarer cases, a fairly even distribution of all three types.  A description of each of the three doshas is listed below.  If you don’t know your particular dosha, you can take a quick test at www.ayurveda.com to find out!
Vata is characterized by the element air and therefore the qualities of a vata dosha are lightweight, dry and restless and these terms will typically apply to most aspects of someone with a vata dosha, such as personality, skin appearance, etc.  The season of the year with vata characteristics is winter and typically a person with this dosha will experience aggravated skin conditions during this season due to excess dryness in the air, which is already prevalent in their constitution.  Extra care should be taken in this season to ensure the skin is well-hydrated and protected.  The lifestyle that a person with a dominant vata dosha typically lives, such as their work/hobby preferences, food choices, etc. tend to increase their innate vata qualities, making imbalance a common occurrence.
Pitta, the dosha influenced by fire, tends to be hot-natured, easy to anger/flush/sunburn and prone to acne.  Summer correlates with this dosha and pitta types typically become imbalanced during this time due to increased heat, which is already abundant in this dosha, therefore overwhelming the constitution.  During the summer months it is especially important for the pitta type to eat foods that are cooling, do activities that are refreshing such as swimming and to avoid being outside in the hottest part of the day.  Skin issues typically are more prevalent during this time so extra care is needed for the skin to avoid blemishes, overheating, rashes, sunburn, etc.  To prevent and/or treat any of these skin conditions, it is important to apply cooling and calming ingredients when cleansing the face.
Kapha, or Earth, constitution types are prone to heaviness, lethargy and oiliness.  This type usually has thick, creamy skin but may suffer from over-production of oil.  Due to the oily nature of the skin, an oil-reducing diet and skin care regimen are important in order to prevent blackheads and blemishes from developing.  Some ways that this type can become imbalanced are through over-indulging in activities such as eating, sleeping and watching TV.  For this type to maintain a state of balance it is important that they stay active, eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables and perform activities that stimulate the mind.
To balance the skin of any of the above types it is important to use products that have opposite characteristics of the dosha.  For example, in a pitta skin type, which is characterized by redness and heat, ingredients with soothing and cooling properties will serve to balance out the inflammatory-prone nature of the skin.  A person who is predominantly vata will probably suffer from dry, dehydrated skin and will benefit from products with a higher emollient (oil-based) content.  Those of a kapha constitution will benefit from an oil-reducing skin care regime.  Auromére® makes dosha-specific Ayurvedic soaps that are excellent for a morning cleanse.  More can be found on these products at http://www.auromere.com/.  For evening, it is recommended to follow a more thorough cleansing routine to remove the products and pollutants that have accumulated on the face throughout the day.  Vata skin types as well as non-acne-prone pitta types would benefit from using the Restoration Kit™ by Blackbox Cosmetics™ for its highly protective antioxidant and moisturizing content. Those with a pitta skin type who are suffering from breakouts and oily kapha types should use the soothing aloe-based GeniSkin™ line from Blackbox Cosmetics™ for its natural, bactericidal ingredients.  These products may be viewed and purchased at http://shop.blackboxcosmetics.com/JB1943. Because Ayurveda is a whole person approach, it is not recommended to provide skin care advice as topical preparations only.  It is important to address internal health in order to maximize external appearance; therefore, proper nutrition, adequate exercise and sufficient sleep/rest/meditation are all imperative to a successful skin care regime.

Product Review: 6 Minute Miracle™ “Microdermabrasion in a Jar”

6 Minute Miracle™:  "Microdermabrasion in a Jar"
 by Blackbox Cosmetics

I’ll tell you a little secret:   I LOVE THIS PRODUCT!!  To be truthful, I had no intention of writing a product review, but I was so impressed with 6 Minute Miracle™ (6MM™) and it's results that I decided I simply had to share this experience with the world (or at least to the part of the world who reads my blog :o)) !!  As you can see from the picture, this exfoliating product comes in a gender-neutral green pot tucked into a clear square acrylic base, but what you can’t see from the picture, is that this container is refillable---making it green in more ways than one!  The product brochure claims that 6MM™ can ‘reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, scars, age spots and pores….while giving you the softest skin imaginable’ and although I’ve only used it once and cannot attest to its wrinkle-reducing claim (yet!), I CAN say that after using 6 Minute Miracle™, my skin DID feel the softest and smoothest its felt since I was, well, probably a toddler!!!  I was so excited about the results that I ran into the living room and told my husband who, after giving me a’ who-is-this-crazed-woman-in-my-house?’ expression,  felt my face and had to admit that it really did feel super soft and smooth!  For most of you readers who don’t know my husband, you have no idea what an accomplishment it is for him to be impressed with ANY product of my obsession.  Usually when I rave about a product and what wonders it has done for me I get the skeptical ‘if-you-say-so’ look, so for him to actually notice a difference is HUGE!  Back on track now:  Since this is an exfoliating product it should only be used 1-2 times a week, which is a shame because it smells SO awesome (soft and creamy clean!), I would love to indulge in it every day!  I will definitely keep using it to see if the fine-line reduction claim holds up (I have a feeling it will!!).  If you missed an earlier blog post of mine about the importance and benefits of exfoliation you can view it here:  http://greenearthskin.blogspot.com/2013/09/exfoliationin-nutshell-although.html.  If you think I’m excited about 6MM™'s scent, don’t even get me started on the ingredients!  Apart from the pharmaceutical grade Microdermabrasion crystals (what, what?! Yeah, you read that right!), this product has an ingredient list like no other!  What would you say to a facial cocktail of rose, pomegranate, coconut oil, green tea and hydrolyzed silk in an aloe base?  And these are only a few of the amazing ingredients that make up 6 Minute Miracle™!   If you’re unaware of the myriad wonders of aloe, refer to the following link for more information:  http://greenearthskin.blogspot.com/2013/09/aloes-juicy-secret-revealed-most-of-us.html  Now I have to admit, in my pre-product ignorance, I treated 6MM™'s usage like a non-event:  in a bright-lit bathroom wearing my work-out clothes, with the TV blaring in the background;  but as soon as I opened 6MM™, smelled it’s dreamy scent and smoothed it over my face, I realized the error of my ways. Ideally, you would want to use it at night, while wearing a silk robe in a candle-lit bathroom with soft music playing and a rose-petal strewn bubble-bath steaming in the background.   Well, we can all dream.  The good news is that 6 Minute Miracle™ works just as effectively while wearing your ratty bathrobe and worn-in bedroom slippers.  And it’s easy to use.  After you wash your face (preferably at night), remove a small amount of the product and very gently begin to rub it over your cheeks in upward and outward circles for several minutes before moving on to the rest of your face, avoiding the delicate eye area.  Once you have gently swirled it all over your face for several minutes, remove it with a warm wash cloth while keeping your eyes closed (you don’t want to get any particles in your eyes) and then rinse your face with cool water.  If you want to learn more about this miracle potion, just click here:  http://shop.blackboxcosmetics.com/JB1943.  Thanks for reading and come back for more!!

Some of my Favorite OTC Products

Even though I always recommend investing in good salon-quality skin care products (especially Blackbox Cosmetics!!:  http://shop.blackboxcosmetics.com/JB1943) there ARE a few Over-The-Counter (OTC) products that I really like for their natural ingredients, effectiveness and their easy-on-the-wallet price.  By OTC, I am referring to products that you can find just about anywhere (Wal-Mart, Target, CVS, Walgreen’s, etc.), not just high-end stores or salons.  The products that I will be recommending are from four different companies that all make natural or organic claims and I will list them in the order that you would use them at home:  make-up remover, cleanser, toner and moisturizer.  The first product that I love is an eye make-up remover called Evenly Radiant® from derma e®.  This clear, gentle product is suitable for all skin types, contains no fragrances or oils, is pH-balanced (for more on the importance of pH, see my previous post here:  http://greenearthskin.blogspot.com/2013/09/aloes-juicy-secret-revealed-most-of-us.html) and contains soothing and anti-aging ingredients like Green Tea, Chamomile and Cucumber.  This botanical-based brand offers a full line of skin care products.  You can learn more about these products at www.dermae.com.  The next product I really enjoy comes from the yes to™ line.  This color-coded line offers various products that are geared towards different skin types (dry, oily, normal, etc.) or skin conditions (sensitive, blemished, aging) and are easily identified by the fruit or vegetable associated with each category, such as the yes to™ cucumbers for sensitive skin, which comes in a green and white bottle or the yes to™ blueberries for mature skin which is in a blue and white tube, etc.  The particular product that I am including in this list is the yes to™ cucumbers cleanser for sensitive skin.  This is a soothing milky cleanser that includes cucumber, aloe juice and green tea in its ingredient list.  Just as important as what it DOES contain, is what it DOESN’T, namely parabens and sulfates.  This cleanser does contain fragrance, however, so if you have fragrance-sensitivities then this may not be the ideal product for you.  For more information about this line, visit them at www.yestocarrots.com.  Avalon Organics® is probably my favorite of all the OTC products in my list.  The particular product that I always have on hand is their Vitamin C toner. This pH-balanced toner is suitable for all skin types, protects the skin against sun damage and is filled with anti-oxidant rich ingredients like white tea, vitamin C, green tea mixed with soothing additions like lavender, chamomile and calendula.   This toner smells almost good enough to drink thanks to a blend of skin-friendly essential oils that are less likely to cause irritation than artificial fragrances.  A lot of the ingredients in this paraben-free blend are certified organic, too, making it a safe bet for your skin and the environment!!  For more information, visit them at www.avalonorganics.com.  My go-to OTC moisturizer is alba BOTANICA®’s natural hawaiian oil free moisturizer.  This moisturizer is best suited for oily skin types and is beneficial for sensitive skin as well due to an ingredient list that includes aloe and green tea.  This smooth moisturizer has a light, fresh scent and is pH-balanced.  The only drawback for me with this moisturizer is the container.  This one comes in a small plastic jar with a screw-on lid.  For a product line that utilizes anti-oxidants, a pump container is more suitable as it better preserves the anti-oxidant’s potency.  More information can be found at www.AlbaBotanica.com.  I hope these recommendations make your next shopping trip a little easier!
